The Brick Classicists Empire Portraits

Currently, the growing Brick Classicists Empire or BCE (previously Lego Classicists) consists of over 100 mini figure portraits made from LEGO System parts including Prof. Dame Mary Beard (Cambridge University and TV broadcaster), Stephen Fry (actor, TV broadcaster and author), Prof. Massimo Osanna (Director General of Museums, Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, Italy), Prof. Dimitrios Pandermelis (former Director, Acropolis Museum), Joanna Lumley (actor and TV broadcaster), Barack Obama (44th President of the United States of America), Dr. Kara Cooney (Egyptologist and TV broadcaster), Prof. John Bennet (former Director, British School at Athens), Raksha Dave (archaeologist and TV broadcaster) and Bettany Hughes (author and TV broadcaster).

BCE Categories

These guidelines were developed after the first year of making LEGO portraits when it became clear that this project would continue to grow and a set of 3 categories was decided to ensure the long-term consistency of the project as well as making sure the greatest amount of diversity could be covered in the world of Classics.

Anyone who is an academic, scholar, conservator, archivist, librarian or historian who works in the study of classics (the ancient worlds of Greece & Rome, traditional classics). Anyone who deals with any other serious study of the ancient world of any other civilization across the world, such as Egyptology. • Classicists • Egyptologists • Archaeologists • Philosophers • Tertiary level educators • Museum Directors, CEOs & Curators • Conservators, Archivists & Librarians • Heads of Classical Schools • Heads of Classical Societies • Benefactors of Classical institutions • Independent Scholars • Ancient Historians • Authors (Classical History)

Brick Classicist

Anyone who works in the discipline of history (ancient and modern) and who is promoting the wider use of the recording and use of history and ancient history and language teachers outside of tertiary education. Anyone, including people outside the discipline of ancient and modern history, such as artists, who have shown great interest in, or provided a significant new perspective to, the study or understanding of ancient history. • Modern Historians • High School level educators • Documentary hosts • TV & Radio presenters • Social media influencers • Journalists, Bloggers & Vloggers • Artists, Actors & Performers

Honorary Brick Classicist

Honourable Mention Brick Classicist

Those who play a seemingly separate role in their work but have a significant passion for ancient history, or provide essential services to those who do, and show that we all own ancient history, and that it’s not just for Classicists.

The Brick Classicists Empire (BCE) portraits are designed and constructed on Gadigal Land, on which the city of Sydney now stands. We respect and honour the traditional owners and their Elders past, present and future.
